BRUCE CHARLESWORTH
AMALGAM
'AMALGAM' is a loosely-categorized collection of landscapes, buildings, interiors and objects taken between 2013-19. While most of Charlesworth's photographs have been set up in the studio, these were all shot in unaltered locations in the real world.
Earlier images in this grouping, like Two Buildings (shown above), emphasize an abstract and often dramatic geometry.
Photographs in 'Amalgum' taken 2015 or later (such as Mound and Cave, at right) are digital composites made up of images shot from different but adjacent standing positions, pieced together to achieve an artificial flatness parallel to the picture plane. These images often don't add up spatially, which gives them an elusive strangeness. All are large-scale photographs with extreme detail.
